Welcome to the University of Washington Boise VA Categorical Internal Medicine Residency!

The mission of the Boise Track is to:

  • Provide superb clinical training in general internal medicine for medical school graduates interested in office-based internal medicine, hospital medicine, or further subspecialty training.  Many graduates have gone on to academic careers.

  • Prepare broadly trained internists and subspecialists for practice.

  • Provide exceptional health care for the veterans and citizens of Idaho.

History of the Boise Track

Established in 1977, the Boise Track was one of the nation’s first primary care internal medicine tracks, converting to a categorical track in 2007. The Boise experience focuses on comprehensive training based in the clinics, wards, and ICU of the VA as well as multiple locations in Idaho. Residents in the Boise Track spend their first and third years in Seattle, and second year of training at the Boise VAMC.

Whom do we train?

In addition to second year residents in Internal Medicine, the Boise VA trains six preliminary year internal medicine interns per year. Medical students from the UW complete core clerkships in general surgery, psychiatry and internal medicine at the Boise VA. In addition to Spokane, we are currently the only site outside of Seattle allowed to provide the entire 3rd year internal medicine clerkship. In addition to our WWAMI roles with the University of Washington and University of Idaho, we have major training roles with the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho, Boise State University, Idaho State University, University of Utah, Gonzaga University, and Oregon Health Sciences. By 2007, our graduates were evenly distributed as office-based primary care internists, hospitalists, and subspecialists. Over the past 31 years there have been 203 graduates of the program with 63 (31%) practicing in Idaho and 144 (71%) practicing in the WWAMI region.
